How To Get Rid Of Earwigs With One Simple Ingredient

Posted on November 3, 2025

While earwigs aren’t harmful to humans, no one wants them crawling around their homes or gardens.

Recently, many people have reported an increase in earwig sightings — I’ve even noticed more of them in my own garden this year than ever before.

If you’re seeing them frequently, especially near your home, it might be time to take some action.

A Simple and Effective DIY Trap

A Facebook user named Alicia Alexander shared an easy and surprisingly effective way to get rid of earwigs in her backyard. She poured about half a cup of olive oil into a shallow bowl and placed it outside on her deck.

Within 24 hours, the bowl had trapped an impressive number of earwigs — and after 36 hours, even more had been caught.

Why Olive Oil Works

For reasons not entirely clear, earwigs are strongly drawn to olive oil. They crawl into the bowl, attracted by its scent, but once inside, the slippery oil prevents them from escaping.

It’s a simple, chemical-free, and mess-free method that requires almost no effort to set up.

Look for the Source of the Problem

If you’re noticing more earwigs than usual, there may be an underlying reason. These insects are often drawn to damp or decaying wood, which could signal potential issues around your home.

Take a moment to inspect your deck, porch, or the foundation of your house for any signs of moisture or rot — addressing these problems can help stop earwigs from gathering in the first place.

A Quick Fix for Outdoor Comfort

If earwigs are making your time outdoors less enjoyable, this olive oil trick is a simple and natural solution worth trying. It’s inexpensive, effective, and easy to do — and it just might be the small fix you need to reclaim your garden and enjoy a bug-free space.
