The car skidded off the road and hung over a huge precipice: one more moment, and the car would have fallen down together with the driver, but then his dog did something unexpected
It was an ordinary hot day. The asphalt trembled from the heat, the air was thick, almost melting. The driver was riding with his loyal dog along a familiar mountain road — just on business, nothing special. The radio was mumbling something in the background, and the golden dog, sticking his nose out the window, was catching the wind. Everything was calm — until that very turn began.
The road suddenly went along the cliff, the wheels caught loose gravel, and the car, having skidded off the road, hung on the edge. Gravel spilled down like sand from a broken hourglass. A chasm yawned beneath them. One wrong move — and the end would come.
The dog reacted instantly. In a second he jumped out of the open window, landed on the ground and, trembling, looked at his owner. The man tried to unbuckle his seat belt, but it got stuck — the metal jammed, the buckle wouldn’t move. The car was slowly tilting forward.
“— Go away, Bucks! — he shouted. — Go! Save yourself!”
But the dog didn’t move. She stood there, ears pressed back, feeling the ground trembling under her paws. And suddenly she did something nobody expecte
Bucks ran up to the car, grabbed the edge of a cloth bag hanging on the door handle — the one where a strong nylon rope was lying. He pulled it out, tugged it toward his owner, barking and calling him to act.
The man, realizing that the dog was giving him a chance, reached out and grabbed the rope.
He wrapped it around his arm, fastened it to a support under the seat and — a push! The door opened. At that very moment the pickup, having broken free, fell down. The man managed to grab the edge, and the dog, with a furious growl, pulled the rope back, as if he himself understood what he was doing.
A few seconds later everything was over. The man was lying on the ground, breathing heavily, and next to him, licking his hands, stood Bucks — covered in dust, with torn fur, but alive.
He looked at the dog and whispered:
“— You saved my life, buddy…”
The sun was setting behind the horizon, and the red pickup, glinting with metal, was disappearing somewhere below, among the shadows of the abyss.
