When Goran Marinkovic walks the streets of Kraljevo, he never walks empty-handed. Food is always with him—because hunger is something he sees every day. For years, Goran has quietly devoted his life to feeding more than 100 stray dogs and cats daily, animals abandoned by circumstance and forgotten by most of the world. For him, this routine is not charity. It is responsibility.
But in March of last year, one small cry changed everything.
As Goran passed through a narrow rocky path, he heard a sound that stopped him in his tracks. It was faint, desperate, and unmistakably alive. The sound led him to a heartbreaking sight: a tiny puppy shivering near a pile of trash, sheltering herself inside an old, discarded shoe. It was all she had to protect her from the cold, the rain, and the endless nights under an open sky.
The puppy was far too young to be alone. There was no sign of her mother. No other dogs nearby. Just a fragile life clinging to survival with nothing but instinct and hope.
Goran knelt down immediately. He had food with him—as always—and offered her a piece of salami. The puppy didn’t bark. She didn’t run. Instead, she collapsed onto her side and exposed her belly, an act of total surrender.
