In late October, Suzette Hall received a desperate call for help from a concerned Good Samaritan. As the founder and director of Logan’s Legacy 29, Hall’s used to people reaching out for assistance rescuing stray dogs — but this particular message stopped her in her tracks.
Somewhere in Los Angeles County, a bull terrier with “filthy” white fur was roaming the streets, hoping someone would stop and save him. He went unnoticed for months, until the Good Samaritan contacted Hall.
“Some say he’s been out there for a year — living on a busy street by a park, covered in motor oil, just begging for food,” Hall wrote on Facebook.
Hall was on her way to another rescue when she got the call about the bull terrier, so she asked her friend and volunteer Rosario Ortiz to check on the pup. When Ortiz arrived, she saw the bull terrier doing precisely what the caller mentioned — and her heart broke at the sight.
“There he was … going up and down the street, searching, hungry, tired and invisible to the world,” Hall wrote. “Rosario couldn’t stop crying. She wanted to help him so badly.”

The pup, later named Maxwell, was skittish at first, but Ortiz refused to leave without him. She spoke to him gently and inched closer until, finally, he let her put a leash around his neck.
“With so much patience and love, she softly earned his trust,” Hall wrote. “He was ready … ready to be off those streets. Ready to finally be seen.”
Ortiz loaded Maxwell into the car and drove him to Camino Pet Hospital, where a thorough checkup revealed the devastating truth about the “filth” on his fur.
“He’s covered in motor oil and scars, but his heart is pure gold,” Hall wrote.
The veterinary team gave Maxwell a soothing bath, wiping away all the excess grease covering his body. By the end of the night, his fur was shiny and white again. And while he still had patches of pink healing skin around his body, the sweet boy felt good as new.
“That filthy, oil-soaked coat is now white as snow,” Hall wrote on Facebook. “The grime is gone, the wounds are healing, and his heart… oh, his heart is wide open.”
Despite everything he’d been through, Maxwell’s spirit wasn’t broken by his past. Even on his first day at the clinic, Maxwell was determined to befriend everyone he met. And his cuddly personality soon became a staff favorite.
“You would never know what he’s been through by the way he loves,” Hall wrote. “Maxwell is pure sweetness. All he wants is love — to cuddle, to lay on your lap, to finally belong.”
Maxwell spent the next two months recovering in foster care, slowly regaining his strength and his puppy-like spirit, until, in December, an adoption application appeared for Maxwell — and they seemed to be the perfect family for him.
“Maxwell has a home. A real one,” Hall wrote on Facebook. “He even has a twin brother by his side. Warm beds, full bellies, love, safety — everything he was denied for so long.”
Two months after his rescue, Maxwell joined his new family’s home and settled in quickly to his new routine. With a new brother who looks exactly like him and parents who shower him with hugs and kisses daily, Maxwell’s new life is better than he could’ve ever imagined.
And Hall couldn’t be happier for him.
“He will never feel those cold streets again. Never wonder where his next meal is coming from. Never be alone,” Hall wrote. “So happy for you, sweet boy. You deserve every ounce of love this life has to offer.”
