Woman Hears Someone Crying For Help In The Cold — And His Face Breaks Her Heart

Posted on January 14, 2026

“[A]ll we could think about was getting him to safety.”

Meet Eddie: an affectionate dog whose story began in a tough spot. Earlier this month, someone abandoned Eddie in a St. Louis, Missouri, park, leaving him tied to a water meter pole. Unable to free himself, Eddie barked and barked. Just when it seemed like things couldn’t get worse, it started pouring rain.

When a community member spotted Eddie crying in the storm, they called Stray Rescue of St. Louis for help. Soon, a rescuer named Donna raced over.

“[W]e saw him on that short rope standing in the mud [and] all we could think about was getting him to safety,” a Stray Rescue of St. Louis staff member told The Dodo.

At first glance, Eddie may have scared some people off.

“Of course he looks intimidating,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis wrote in a Facebook post. “He’s huge and barks at us as we approach.”

But Donna was determined. She carefully greeted Eddie, showing him that she meant no harm and offering her hand. With the help of some tasty snacks, Eddie obliged. It wasn’t long before he was snuggled in the safety of her Jeep.

Rescuers prepared to give Eddie the time and space he needed to adjust. But it turns out, Eddie didn’t need space. In fact, he wanted the exact opposite.

“Eddie adjusted to the shelter after about … one minute!” the staff member said. “As soon as he was in our clinic, he started rubbing his body against everyone’s legs, climbing in our laps as if he was a small pup, and kissing us with his big ‘ol head. We were all laughing and taking pictures of this very good boy.”

Given Eddie’s huge heart and even-keeled temperament, staff members think he’d fit in with lots of families — especially those excited to spend lots of time playing with him.

“Eddie is a fun boy, so his perfect family would be one that likes to take him for a walk or play fetch for a bit when they get home from work or school, then snuggle up on the couch for the evening,” the staff member said. “He can keep up with a fast-paced family or slow down with a more lowkey family. He could be the only dog or would do just fine with a playmate, eager to wrestle.”

Clearly, Eddie is ready to fall in love with anyone willing to love him back. Now, it’s just a matter of finding that person.

“Eddie is such a ham,” the staff member said. “He smiles sooo big, it’s the cutest.”
