In February 2024, rescuers Jenna and Randy were scanning the list of residents at their municipal shelter when one pup suddenly caught their attention. Bernie, a Great Pyrenees, was on the euthanasia list after being found with multiple wounds and a shattered humerus.
Jenna and Randy, who rescue pups through their organization, Dog Squad, couldn’t bear to let his story end there. They immediately pulled Bernie from the shelter and scheduled his fracture repair surgery, hoping to foster him until he was strong enough to find a forever home.

A few months after the surgery, however, Jenna and Randy’s plan for Bernie changed unexpectedly.
“Bernie’s body began rejecting the metal implants,” Jenna told The Dodo. “Ultimately, his leg had to be amputated.”

The couple had already become smitten with Bernie before his leg was removed. But they fell even more in love with him while he recovered from the amputation and officially adopted him in October of that year.

Exactly one year after Bernie’s leg removal, Jenna and Randy were checking the municipal shelter’s residents list again when they saw a familiar face. Another fluffy dog named Atticus, who looked just like Bernie, was on the euthanasia list after being found with a missing paw and a severe bone infection.
Jenna and Randy felt instantly drawn to the poor pup.
“We have a soft spot for Great Pyrenees and knew we had to step in,” Jenna said. “From the moment we met Atticus, the connection was instant — though we still struggle to put into words why it felt so strong.”

The inexplicable connection between Atticus and the founders of Dog Squad only grew stronger when they took him to a specialist and learned the truth about his condition.
“[D]ue to the severity of the bone infection, his entire leg needed to be amputated,” Jenna said. “The same leg as Bernie’s.”

They soon found a foster home for Atticus, where he could recover comfortably from his surgery for a few weeks. Once he was strong enough, Jenna and Randy introduced him to Bernie, and both dogs’ reactions blew them away.
“Bernie typically does not like large male dogs,” Jenna said. “But when he met Atticus, his tail wagged. They sniffed each other, wagging endlessly, and immediately seemed to find comfort in one another.”

Jenna and Randy were shocked by how well they got along, having never met before.
“We had never seen Bernie respond that way before. It was instant and unmistakable — almost like they knew,” Jenna said.

As part of Dog Squad’s intake process, the couple tested Atticus and Bernie’s DNA through a kit called Wisdom Panel. The pups’ harmonious meeting felt almost like a family reunion to Jenna and Randy, and it wasn’t until they received Atticus’ results — complete with a list of relatives — that they realized why.
“When I saw Bernie listed as his half-brother, I froze — and then immediately started screaming,” Jenna said. “It genuinely left us speechless.”
The rescuers were stunned. Bernie and Atticus were almost identical in every way: They both had fluffy white faces, heartbreaking backstories and the same leg removed. And, shockingly, they shared DNA.
“It felt unreal. Statistically impossible,” Jenna said. “Suddenly, so many things made sense: their bond, their comfort with one another, the familiarity we couldn’t explain.”

Atticus’ arrival at Dog Squad felt like fate, and the brothers have become best friends since that day.
While they’re not technically a bonded pair, meaning they can live happily in separate homes, the two enjoy frequent play sessions together and look forward to even more hangouts once Atticus finds his forever family.

Life for Bernie and Atticus started out as devastating, but it couldn’t have turned out better for the resilient boys. They’re both healthy, loved beyond measure and, despite all odds, reconnected with their long-lost brother.
And their rescuers are still trying to wrap their heads around it all.
“Even now, it feels surreal — like something bigger than coincidence, something we were never meant to fully understand,” Jenna said.
