The crystal chandelier scattered light across the marble floor as hundreds of guests watched in uneasy silence.
Isabella stood alone in the center of the ballroom.
Her black evening gown hid most of the bruises, but not all of them. A thin cut marked her cheek. Purple shadows stained her shoulder. The injuries were fresh enough that makeup could not fully erase them.
She held a phone to her ear.
“Yes,” she said quietly. “I’m standing right in front of him.”
Across the room, Ethan Caldwell adjusted the cuffs of his tuxedo and began walking toward her.
The guests parted for him automatically. He was the billionaire host, the man whose donations built hospitals and museums, the man every politician wanted photographed beside.
