You catch movement out of the corner of your eye and instantly freeze. Something with far too many legs races across the floor, moving with incredible speed and looking almost prehistoric. At first glance, it seems like something dangerous—but it’s often just a house centipede. Despite its unsettling appearance, this fast-moving creature is usually harmless to people and spends its time hunting other household pests rather than bothering humans.
House centipedes thrive in dark, damp areas like basements, bathrooms, and laundry rooms where moisture attracts insects. They feed on ants, silverfish, cockroaches, spiders, and other small bugs, making them unexpected allies in pest control. Although they possess venom to subdue prey, bites are rare and typically cause only mild, temporary reactions. Reducing humidity, sealing entry points, and keeping storage areas dry can make your home less appealing to them. While startling to encounter, house centipedes are generally more helpful than harmful.
