Just two years earlier, Daniel’s life had seemed perfect. He owned a successful construction company, lived in a massive house, and closed multimillion-dollar deals almost every month.
Then one night changed everything.
While driving home after a business meeting, Daniel was involved in a terrible accident. The doctors managed to save his life, but he would never walk again.
During the months he spent in the hospital, his company slowly began to fall apart. Several major clients left for competitors, investors started pulling out their money, and the man Daniel had trusted to manage the business turned out to be a fraud.
But the hardest blow had nothing to do with money.
Daniel’s wife told him she could no longer live that way. She took their seven-year-old daughter, Sophie, and left the country.
At first, Daniel spoke to his daughter regularly on the phone. But over time, the calls became less and less frequent.
Two years later, almost nothing remained of his former empire except a small struggling company.
And that was exactly when an opportunity appeared that could change everything.
A major foreign corporation became interested in one of Daniel’s projects. If he could secure the contract, he would be able to pay off his debts, rehire his employees, and finally rebuild the company.
The corporation’s representatives traveled to the city specifically to meet with him.
But one day before the meeting, their director, Mr. Roberts, suddenly said:
“We like to know the people we’re going to work with. Tomorrow evening, we’d like to meet your family. No negotiations. Just a family dinner.”
Daniel froze.
He couldn’t admit that his wife had left him after the accident and that his daughter was now living in another country. During previous negotiations, Daniel had mentioned Sophie several times, so his potential partners naturally assumed she lived with him.
That evening, Daniel sat alone in the living room for a long time, desperately trying to think of a solution.
Then Anna, his housekeeper, walked into the room.
She had been working in his home for several years. Sometimes her eight-year-old daughter, Emma, came with her because Anna had no one else to leave her with.
Daniel looked at the little girl, and suddenly an idea came to him.
“Anna, I need to ask you for a very strange favor.”
The moment Anna heard his proposal, she immediately shook her head.
“You want Emma to tell a group of strangers that she’s your daughter?”
“Just for one night. I’ll pay you.”
Emma frowned as soon as she heard him.
“My mom doesn’t need money for telling a lie.”
Daniel stared at her, caught off guard.
“Then what do you want?”
The girl looked at his wheelchair, then straight into his eyes.
“I want you to stop talking to my mom like she’s invisible. She cleans your house every day, and you don’t even know when her birthday is.”
Daniel had no idea what to say.
After a few seconds, he held out his hand to her.
“Deal.”
The following evening, the house filled with guests.
Emma had been given a beautiful green dress. Daniel explained that all she had to do was sit beside him, smile, and speak as little as possible.
“The most important thing is not to get nervous,” he told her.
“You’re the one who’s nervous,” Emma replied calmly.
When the foreign business partners arrived, everything seemed to go perfectly at first.
Emma greeted them politely, sat beside Daniel, and answered their simple questions. Mr. Roberts clearly seemed to like her.
