He Had Nowhere To Run As Floodwaters Rose — Then Hope Arrived

In recent days, heavy rainfall has caused catastrophic flooding across parts of western Kentucky. But amid the chaos of that natural disaster, stories of kindness and hope have begun to emerge.

Taylor Colley is a lineman for the Jackson Purchase Energy Corporation, based in hard-hit city of Paducah. He and two colleagues were tasked with de-energizing power lines affected by the floods, traveling the area by boat.

While doing so, however a more pressing matter arose. On a log floating in the flooded landscape, the crew spotted a helpless animal clinging to life — and they didn’t hesitate to act.

“That’s not at all what you expect to see on a floating log in the water,” Colley told The Dodo. “We knew the chances of him surviving were very bleak if we didn’t help him.”

The animal, a wild rabbit, had run out of hope. But then new hope arrived.

“I do believe he knew we were there to help, especially since he never moved or tried to jump from the log he was on,” Colley said. “Once we got him safely on the boat with us, he was nearly immediately calm. He knew he was in a safer place now.”

Colley and the crew then headed straight to the nearest dry ground and set the rabbit free.

They’d save his life.

“We simply knew we couldn’t pass by him without trying to save him,” Colley said. “We were all thankful that, between our own safety, teamwork and good morals, we were able to give the rabbit a chance to have a less ‘dampened’ future.”
