“[S]he was just following me up the street as I was delivering mail.”
Amir, a Minnesota-based postal worker, has been taking care of the stray and feral cats on his route for the past four years. He drops off food for them on a daily basis and builds warm shelters during the winter. At this point, he’s become a celebrity among the neighborhood kitties.

“As soon as they see me, they’ll run up to me,” Amir, who preferred to have his last name omitted, told The Dodo.
But the other day, Amir was taken aback when a cat who was even friendlier than usual approached him.
“She came up to me just screaming … Then she was just following me up the street as I was delivering mail,” Amir said.

It was late December and freezing in Minnesota, so the cat was shivering and soaking wet from the snow. Amir picked her up, which made her instantly relax. She didn’t seem to mind at all as he held her in one hand while delivering mail with the other.
Because the cat was so friendly, Amir assumed she must belong to someone in the neighborhood. He knocked on several doors, but no one claimed her.

When Amir returned to his truck, he dropped her off in the front seat, where she instantly made herself comfortable. She seemed perfectly content to just watch Amir work all day.
“[S]he was pretty much hanging out with me half that day in my mail truck,” Amir said. “She just went to sleep.”

Amir’s wife came to pick up the cat during her lunch break and get her set up in their home. She and Amir gave the cat food, a warm bath and a cozy place to sleep. Before long, she was feeling much better.
Amir posted about the cat on multiple websites and online forums, but still, no one claimed her. At that point, he knew he needed to find her a forever home. Luckily, he happened to know that his brother had been looking to adopt a cat.

Amir’s brother didn’t hesitate to take the kitty in and name her Sushi. Sushi’s new dad introduced her to her new dog sibling, Pepper. It took Sushi a few days to adjust to living with Pepper, but now they’re inseparable.
“[T]hey’re, like, best friends,” Amir said. “They run around the house chasing each other. They sleep by each other.”

While Amir, who has four kitties of his own, was sad not to keep Sushi, now that she lives with his brother, he can visit the little cat he rescued anytime he likes.
