The streets of Bali are known for their breathtaking scenery, rich culture, and warm people. But beyond the beauty, there’s a harsh reality: a growing homeless dog population that continues to suffer in silence.

For years, the local authorities have struggled to control this heartbreaking situation. But where systems fall short, individuals rise.

And thankfully, kindhearted volunteers have stepped forward to do something about it—ordinary people with extraordinary compassion.

A Chance Encounter in Denpasar

Among these everyday heroes is a 26-year-old man named Rico Soegiarto. One fateful night, while walking home through the bustling streets of Denpasar, Bali, Rico came across a heartbreaking sight that made him stop in his tracks.

Lying there in the middle of the street was a husky so frail, so starved, that her bones were jutting out beneath her skin. She was missing large patches of fur, her body practically a skeleton. She was, quite literally, on the edge of death.

And yet, despite the condition of her failing body, her eyes were still alive. They gleamed—a piercing, icy blue filled with pain, yet holding a glimmer of something rare: hope.

When the Heart Speaks Louder Than Words

Rico didn’t know what it was that drew him to her. He couldn’t explain it. “I do not know what was so special about her,” he later admitted. “It’s about heart and feeling. I found her when I was on the way back home from work, she was in the middle of the street.”
