Broadway Icon Sondra Lee, Original ‘Hello, Dolly!’ and ‘Peter Pan’ Star, Passes Away at 97

Posted on February 27, 2026

Sondra Lee, a beloved figure of the American stage whose career spanned nearly nine decades, has died at the age of 97.

Best known for originating the role of Tiger Lily in the 1954 Broadway production of Peter Pan and for creating Minnie Fay in the 1964 premiere of Hello, Dolly!, Lee left a lasting mark on musical theatre history.

She died of natural causes at her New York City residence on Feb. 23, according to an announcement from a close friend.

Born Sondra Lee Gash on Sept. 30, 1928, in Newark, New Jersey, she overcame childhood health challenges to pursue ballet and performance. Her breakthrough came when she collaborated with renowned choreographer Jerome Robbins to develop the character of Tiger Lily — a performance later seen by millions when the production was broadcast on television.

Over the years, Lee worked alongside some of the most recognized names in entertainment. Italian director Federico Fellini cast her in a scene of his 1960 film La Dolce Vita, further expanding her artistic reach beyond Broadway.

In addition to performing, Lee became a respected teacher, coach and creative consultant, mentoring numerous actors and artists throughout her lifetime. She also authored a memoir reflecting on her experiences in show business.

Her final public appearance took place in June 2025 at Carnegie Hall during a concert presentation of Hello, Dolly!, where she was honored with a standing ovation as the last surviving principal member of the original cast.
