In the evening, I came home tired and just wanted to lie down and get some rest.

I Lifted My Blanket and Saw Something With Tiny “Legs.” An Hour Later, I Finally Saw What It Was.

A Pale Shape on My Bed Had Me Searching for Insects Until I Took a Closer Look

I lifted the blanket to get into bed and stopped halfway. Something pale was resting on the sheet. It had a rounded center and several thin strands sticking out at odd angles. In the dim light, those strands looked like legs.

I kept hold of the blanket. If I dropped it, I might lose sight of whatever was on the bed. If I moved it any farther, I was afraid the thing would move too. So I stood there with one arm in the air, watching a speck on my sheet as though it were watching me back.

Nothing happened. Eventually, I reached for my phone.

Every Photo Made It Look Stranger

The first picture was blurry. I took another from the side, then one from directly above. When I zoomed in, the rounded part looked swollen, and the thin strands seemed to spread out in every direction. I could see more of it on my screen than I could with my own eyes, yet I felt less sure of what I was looking at.

I sent the clearest photo to a couple of friends and asked if they recognized it. While I waited, I searched for small pale insects with long legs. I kept changing the words, hoping a different search would turn up a picture that matched mine.

Every result had something in common with what I’d found. One had the right shape. Another had the right color. Then I’d go back to my photo and notice a detail that made the comparison fall apart. I took another picture, convinced a better angle would settle it.

I Kept Waiting for It to Move

At some point I put the phone down and watched the sheet. I figured that if the thing crawled even a fraction of an inch, I could at least narrow down what I was looking for. I picked a crease beside it and used that as a reference.

It stayed in exactly the same place. I checked the time and realized I’d been at this for nearly an hour. I’d imagined it crawling under the pillow, getting lost in the blanket, and turning out to be one of several. So far, the only thing moving around the bedroom was me.

That was when I realized I’d spent most of the hour looking at my phone. I’d enlarged the picture until the little shape filled the screen and searched for insects until every strand looked like a leg. I set the phone aside, got closer to the bed, and gave my eyes a moment to adjust.

The Detail I’d Missed in the Photographs

Up close, the strands didn’t bend at joints. They curved and tapered. One looked thicker near the point where it met the pale center, then narrowed almost to a thread. I traced its shape with my eyes until I could see where it came from.

The center was a seed. It had begun to sprout, and the delicate strands I’d been counting as legs were roots.

Once I saw it, I looked at the photo again. The swollen shape and the spidery lines were exactly where they had been in the first picture. I could still see why they had scared me. I could also see the little root I’d missed while I was busy looking for an insect.

One Last Message to My Friends

I sent my friends a second message to tell them what I’d found. After nearly an hour of close-ups and increasingly specific searches, the explanation took a few words. A seed had ended up under my blanket and started to grow.

I still didn’t know how it had got there. That question felt a lot less urgent now that I could see what it was. I moved the seed off the sheet, straightened the blanket, and finally got into bed.
