Family Gives Dog False Hope When They Drag Him Back To Shelter A Week Later

Posted on August 22, 2025

When Drogo first arrived at the Austin Animal Center, no one could have predicted that he would remain there for over a year and a half. The American Pit Bull Terrier was brought in after his previous owner was evicted, with the promise that the man would return for him. But that day never came.

As time passed, countless other dogs found homes, but Drogo remained. Days turned into months, and months stretched into more than a year. Though the shelter was a safe place, the same concrete walls and limited space began to take a toll on him. Despite being surrounded by loving staff and volunteers, he longed for a real home.

While other dogs were adopted soon after arrival, Drogo continued to wait. It wasn’t for lack of charm. Staff adored him, especially a volunteer named Jessica, who spoke highly of his personality.

“I know you shouldn’t play favorites… but Drogo is my favorite. He thinks he’s a lapdog, and we haven’t had the heart to tell him otherwise. Drogo is house-trained, doesn’t bark much, and did well with my 6-year-old son. He’s a friend to every person he meets and quickly became a volunteer favorite. Drogo has been in the shelter for a year now, one of the longest-stay dogs, and is so ready to have a home of his own,” Jessica said in an interview.

Eventually, it looked like things were turning around. Drogo was adopted at last. After waiting 500 days, he left the shelter with a new family and a hopeful heart.

Sadly, that happiness was short-lived. Just one week after going home, Drogo was returned. No one at the Austin Animal Center could believe it. The staff were heartbroken to see him back so soon, especially after he had waited so long to be chosen.

“We are all crushed that Drogo was returned to the shelter so quickly. He’s devastated. It’s not fair,” a shelter employee shared on TikTok.

Despite the setback, the team refused to give up on him

Shelter volunteers doubled their efforts to find him a permanent home. Videos featuring Drogo were posted on social media and reached thousands of people. His story was picked up by national news outlets. Even with all the attention, no one stepped forward to adopt him.

“He’s house-trained, loves walks, and is so sweet. Someone please take him home!” one volunteer pleaded in a video.

The team held onto hope. Then Drogo’s fourth birthday arrived, marking his 550th day in the shelter. The volunteers threw him a small celebration, filled with love and one shared wish: for him to finally go home for good.

A New Beginning After a Long Wait

That wish was answered. “It must have been a good luck charm because Drogo was ADOPTED today after 500+ days in the shelter,” the shelter announced in a Facebook post.

Drogo’s journey was long and filled with disappointment, but the dog who once watched others leave while he stayed behind now has a place to call his own. His new family will hopefully be the one to help him heal from all he’s been through.

After everything, Drogo finally has what he waited so patiently for: a real chance at happiness.
