One man has been arrested so far after 22 dogs were seized from a suspected dog-fighting ring
A major rescue effort in Fort Wayne, Indiana, brought relief to 22 dogs and puppies believed to have been used in a dog-fighting network. The coordinated response, carried out by the Fort Wayne Police Department in partnership with Humane World for Animals, focused on three separate addresses across the city. The operation resulted in both the recovery of the animals and the arrest of one individual connected to the case.

Authorities executed search warrants at properties located on Buell Drive, East Berry Street, and Bridlewood. Inside, they uncovered disturbing conditions. Dogs were found confined to cramped cages and outdoor pens, many exhibiting untreated injuries and signs of neglect. Several were housed in sweltering sheds without proper ventilation or clean drinking water, forced to endure temperatures climbing above 110 degrees.
Investigators also seized equipment consistent with organized dog fighting, along with other evidence pointing to sustained cruelty. Some of the animals bore scars, wounds, and visible signs of malnutrition, confirming suspicions that they had been exploited for fighting.

Samantha Chapman, Indiana state director for Humane World for Animals, expressed both sorrow and admiration following the rescue. “These dogs were enduring some of the worst conditions imaginable—filth, extreme heat, untreated wounds. And yet, they still greeted us with wagging tails. That’s the kind of resilience that breaks your heart and gives you hope at the same time.”
Among the most troubling discoveries were dogs tethered outside with heavy chains, exposed directly to the sun with no access to shade. Others suffered from flystrike, a painful condition caused when flies lay eggs on untreated wounds. The combination of heat and neglect left many in critical need of medical attention.

Police confirmed the arrest of Trevel Shantae Bell at one of the properties. He faces two felony counts tied to animal fighting and the possession of animals for that purpose. Investigators are also looking into whether the operation had links to other criminal activity, including gambling, firearms, and narcotics, which often intersect with dog-fighting cases.
All rescued animals have since been transferred to a secure location under the supervision of Humane World for Animals. They are undergoing medical evaluations, treatment for parasites and wounds, and will be provided with the chance to heal in a safe environment. Once their recovery is underway, the organization hopes to place them into permanent, caring homes.

The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement officials urge the public to remain alert and report suspected animal cruelty. Cases like this demonstrate how community awareness and coordinated enforcement can disrupt patterns of abuse and open the door to a brighter future for vulnerable animals.
With proper care and compassion, these dogs now have a chance to live the lives they have always deserved. Please visit I Love My Dog to read more stories about animal welfare and inspiring stories of recovery. We share news that matters!
