Meet Andy: a curious, high-energy pup whose good intentions recently landed him in a sticky situation.
The Weimaraner, who’s named after Andy Bernard, from “The Office,” is allowed lots of playtime in his yard, an area he takes advantage of exploring as much as possible.
The other day, Andy’s mom noticed the pup acting strangely — he was pacing around outside and seemed to be hiding something. Getting a better look, she saw a pair of tiny legs poking out from Andy’s mouth.
The woman quickly realized that Andy was holding a baby rabbit. She told Andy to open his mouth and offered him a treat in exchange, but the pup wouldn’t budge. He kept the bunny delicately clutched in his jaw, perhaps trying to keep him safe.
Though Andy didn’t intend to hurt the rabbit, his actions were still cause for concern, as dog mouths can carry bacteria that’s dangerous to wildlife. Ideally, if a pet comes in contact with wildlife, their parents should contact an expert as soon as possible to ensure everyone’s health and safety.
In this case, Andy figured out what to do. He led his mom through the yard and showed her the nest where he found the baby. The pup dropped the rabbit, allowing his mom an opportunity to examine him. Gingerly holding the kit in a towel, the woman checked the bunny all over and found that he hadn’t been harmed.
“OK, let’s bring you back,” the woman said in a video taken at the time.
Safe in his nest, the baby happily snuggled with his family. Later that day, Andy’s mom installed a barrier around the burrow to ensure no one would bother them again.
